Thermal simulation for ETH Zurich, Höngg
Simulations were conducted to evaluate a number of cooling systems in single and multiple-occupancy offices in terms of cost and comfort as part of the renovation of the practical physics building (HPP) on the ETH Zurich Hönggerberg campus. The cold air drop in the proximity of windows was investigated on the basis of flow simulations.
A dynamic thermal simulation was used to compare different office cooling systems and to produce a list of their advantages and disadvantages. The simulation included both summer and winter scenarios. The cold air drop in the proximity of windows was also investigated using a flow simulation based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In addition to putting the high-rise building to office and laboratory use, the investigation also considered adding a restaurant and hotel.
