With Implenia as leading company, ARGE Transco-Sedrun, on behalf of AlpTransit Gotthard, is building the Sedrun leg (NRLA lot 360) of the new Gotthard base tunnel.
Conventional but highly sophisticated boring machines opened the north-south traverse under the Tavetsch range. The 6½-km tunnel may be the system’s shortest leg in the 57-km rail tunnel system, but it is certainly the most challenging. The project is estimated at CHF 1.25 billion. The Sedrun leg also posed a unique logistics challenge. The boring sites can only be accessed through a special, one-kilometer-long access tunnel and two 800-meter-deep vertical shafts. The Sedrun leg will house one of the two Gotthard base tunnel multifunction sites, with emergency lay-bys, a rail operation center and security installations.
