Ten key focus areas

Sustainability in concrete terms

Implenia laid the foundations for sustainable business development in 2010.

As part of the Group-wide “Sustainable Implenia” initiative, we defined ten key areas for action, which have since been continually developed and have become increasingly specific:

  1. Code of Conduct
The Code of Conduct has been in force since January 2010 and has since been presented and discussed at numerous regional training events to ensure it is understood by all employees and firmly established in their day-to-day work.
  2. Customer relationships
  3. Sustainable products and services
By offering sustainable products and services, Implenia also aims to support its customers to implement their sustainability strategies. For this purpose, an overview of all products and services has been drawn up which illustrates all sustainability services provided throughout the Group, thereby creating transparency for employees and customers. The portfolio will be expanded and developed on an ongoing basis.
With the Effizienzpfad (path to efficiency), the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA) has formulated the conditions for constructing buildings for the 2000-Watt Society. Implenia was actively involved in drawing up this document and will realise projects in line with these targets.
  4. Respect for the environment
In addition to constructing buildings that are as energy- and resource-efficient as possible while in use, the handling of resources and energy in the construction phase is also of key importance. For this reason, Implenia has identified the main energy and CO2 drivers on Implenia’s sites, production plants and properties, and has gathered relevant usage data on the primary emission, energy and material flows and drawn up specific optimisation measures based on them.
  5. Value-based management
Implenia is laying the foundations for sustainably successful business management on the basis of Group-wide, transparent key performance indicators (KPIs). Key elements are value-based management, forecasting ability, the four-eye principle and uniform reporting. These KPIs do not only reflect the past, however. Instead, these key figures will provide guidance for the future and highlight trends. Alongside financial figures, other data relevant to Implenia will be recorded: market trends, quote volume, acquisition success rates, absences, number of accidents, etc. Our ultimate aim is to establish a fundamental understanding of the sustainable value drivers throughout the Group – from the construction site right through to top management.
  6. Health and safety at work
As Implenia’s staff are its greatest capital, we attach a high level of importance to occupational health and safety. Implenia organises regular training events and provides a broad range of information material to raise awareness among its staff, in particular industrial and technical, of a comprehensive prevention strategy.
  7. Training and development/talent management
Suitable employees are trained for management duties by means of a modular training and development system. The management training course, which is independent of the organisational units, serves to establish a uniform management culture, starting with our vision, values, culture, structure and strategy and going on to look at management principles, team building, conflict handling and knowledge management.
Implenia also promotes the training and development of specialised, business-typical experts. An excellent example of our methodology is the trainee programme for construction cost planners – this is of key importance for general contracting because it establishes during the quote phase whether a project will end up making a profit or a loss.
  8. Relationships with suppliers
  9. Innovation
Implenia aims to focus its enormous, cross-divisional expertise in all project phases more closely on developing and improving products, services and processes. A cross-divisional innovation team reporting directly to the CEO has been created for this purpose.
  10. Communication
Creating a sustainable Implenia requires every single employee to contribute. Sustainable, in other words continuous communication is essential for achieving this. The newsletter “Sustainable Implenia”, which is published several times a year, informs all employees on recent progress in the individual focus areas.
