Cross-city link lot 2.1 - construction of train station shell Löwenstrasse, Zurich

The construction of the Löwenstrasse transit train station is the centrepiece of the new cross-city link between Zurich-Altstetten and Zurich-Oerlikon. The new transit rail station will be built with 3 tracks at a depth of 16 m and a length of 600 m under the existing tracks 3 to 9 and the side hall of the Zurich main train station. At the same time, the retail space in the main train station will be expanded by the new Löwenstrasse Passage.

The construction of the Löwenstrasse transit station is the centrepiece of the new cross-city link between Zurich-Altstetten and Zurich-Oerlikon. The new transit rail station will be built with 3 tracks at a depth of 16m and a length of 600m under the existing tracks 4 to 9 and the side hall of the Zurich main train station. At the same time, the retail space in the main train station will be expanded by the new Löwenstrasse Passage.

Construction method: Most of the new train station has a cut-and-cover design. After the slurry walls and the shell of the intermediate floor have been built and the roof above the platform level concreted, excavation for the transit station will take place under the new concrete ceiling in both directions at once (east and west) in the area of the city tunnel. Shell construction will include the creation of the massive floor plate and exterior walls attached on one side to the diaphragm wall with concrete.

Parts of the existing train station building are supported on micro-piles and presses. The subsequent shell construction will also have a cut-and-cover design.
