Transport tunnels (tunnels, underground power plants, shafts)

Successfully building tunnels for rail and road traffic demands a combination of experience and know-how using contemporary technology and respect for nature. Implenia is proficient in all modern tunnel construction methods. We're also fully versed in special tunnel works of every nature. The full service range of Implenia, which we offer in Switzerland and select other countries, includes the challenging final stage tasks of rail and traffic engineering and the renovation of underground constructions.

We set international standards. Our latest coup: the longest railway tunnel in the world, passing through the Gotthard over a distance of 57 kilometres, which is set to open in a few years. We're open to all forms of collaboration, whether we serve as general contractor, total contractor or specialised subcontractor.

Implenia is proficient in all excavation and construction methods:

  • Drilling and blasting in rock
  • Headings in rock with tunnel bore machines (TBMs): full-face tunnel bore machines, tunnel bore widening machines
  • Shield machine excavation in soft ground: with or without mechanical support, using compressed air (compressed air shield), earth pressure balance (earth pressure balance shield) and compressed fluid (hydroshield)
  • Machine-supported excavation in rock and soft ground: roadheader, excavation with impact hammer and excavator bucket, ripper tooth and cutting head
  • Special construction and construction support measures: pipe screen, diamond screen, jet grout arch, grouting, ground freezing, facial anchor points
  • Preventer-protected exploration and prospecting
  • Tubbing production

We construct vertical and inclined shafts using the appropriate method, be it shaft sinking, raise boring or drill and blast. This is supplemented with a host of additional services such as material purchasing and logistics concepts, surveying, project and construction management and consulting and feasibility studies.

Power plant construction (galleries, caverns and shafts)

Implenia offers a full range of services for power plant construction. Our engineers and specialists are familiar with the construction of galleries and shafts of challenging lengths and inclinations – be it using one of our many mechanical driving mechanisms, in which we have unparalleled experience and our own, comprehensive inventory, or through conventional drilling and blasting. We construct vertical and inclined shafts using the appropriate method, be it shaft sinking, raise boring or drill and blast. Furthermore, we can build caverns in any dimension.

Power plants are often built in difficult-to-reach, mountainous areas, where our engineers and specialists have to overcome especially difficult topographical and climatic hurdles. Thanks to their flexibility and breadth of experience, they succeed in defying the toughest of conditions and hand over the completed project to the customer on time and in the usual Implenia quality.

Service tunnels

Supply and waste disposal lines are vital lifelines of populated areas. The continued growth of urban centres including their peripheries calls for new construction methods causing the least disruption to people and traffic. Implenia offers a complete range of innovative, tested solutions for excavation-free construction.

Using microtunnelling, pipe drives and horizontal drilling, Implenia is able to build service tunnels and lines with only two connections to the surface: the starting and end shafts. Sinking these shafts is another service we can offer. This spares the need for interfacing, so that your order can be accomplished more quickly and flexibly. And we have all the necessary equipment at our disposal for all techniques.

Our range of services for excavation-free construction is rounded out with the offer of consulting and feasibility studies.
